Chains of Books, Bookshelves and the Sun
はじめに
建築家・松井亮による展覧会「LIBRARIES｜鎖でつながれた本と本棚と太陽」は、会場に溢れる太陽の光に着想を得て企画した期間限定のライブラリーです。会場となる五色橋ビルは、1986年に倉庫兼研究開発施設として建設されました。現在は、その役割を終えて異なる用途への転用が始まっています。戦後、倉庫や工場の街として栄えた芝浦地区は、集合住宅やオフィスが混在するハイブリッドな街へと変貌を遂げています。本展の開催は、この地区に残る五色橋ビルのような古い建物が、街に根付きながら変化を続ける建物としての宣言であり、建物の価値を高める新たなリノベーションを探る試みでもあります。
Introduction
Goshikibashi Building was built as a warehouse and R&D facility in 1986. Currently this bulding are beginning to evolve to new uses. In the past, this area was a prosperous warehouse district. It is now transforming into a hybrid town with a mix of apartments and office buildings. “LIBRARIES” directed and designed by architect Ryo Matsui, is a declaration that we aim to create buildings that continues to change while taking root in this city, with a mixture of all uses, from private to public.
展覧会について
かつて、本は鎖で本棚とつながれ、太陽の光で本を読んでいました。図書館の起源は、12世紀頃の修道院にあり、安定した自然光が採り込まれる古い礼拝堂や講堂を改修して図書室として利用していました。都市に公共図書館が建設され始めた後も、本と本棚と太陽の関係は変わらず、活版印刷と白熱電球が広く普及するまで、図書館は日没に閉館をしていたのです。本棚がある場所が本を読む場所だった頃、その場所に注ぎ込む太陽の光や、その場所から見える風景は、本の記憶の一部となっていたのかもしれません。
運河と海岸通りに挟まれた立地にある五色橋ビルは、日の出から夕暮れまで自然光が差し込みます。本と本棚と太陽の関係を根源とした近代の図書館に思いを馳せ、太陽と呼応する１０種類の本棚を点在させました。この場所のコンテクストを手掛かりとした個性的な本棚には、テーマに紐づく本が選書されています。本棚が居場所となるサイトスペシフィックな図書館です。期間限定のライブラリーは、場所固有の本質を紡ぐための時間を生み出し、建物と都市の良好な関係を作るための下地になることを期待しています。（企画：建築家・松井亮）

About the exhibition
In the past, books and bookshelves were connected with chains,close to windows where the sunlight was. You had to read books within reach of the chains, therefore where there were books was where the books were read.
It is said, the origin of libraries was in a monastery around the 12th century, which was built because the number of books increased. Therefore, the old chapel and auditorium with natural light were renovated to a small library. The construction of public libraries in the city began around the 15th and 16th centuries. They did not use lamps and closed before the sun set. During the 18th century, with the widespread of letterpress printing and incandescent light bulbs, the relationship between books, bookshelves and the sun were revolutionized.
LIBRARIES is a temporary library. The exhibition was organized to find clues to the evolution of the building. “Goshikibashi Building” was built about 35 years ago as a warehouse and R&D facility between a canal and a coastal street. The horizontal continuous windows, offers a scenery of the Tokyo Bay. Inspired by an environment with abundant natural light who keeps shining in before sunset, we focus on the relationship between books, bookshelves and the sun. We have scattered ten unique bookshelves that interact with it. The exhibition LIBRARIES is held as an act of perceiving a place, where the bookshelf becomes a place of residence where one encounters books connected to its bookshelf.

10種類の本棚について
鎖でつながれた本と本棚と太陽の関係は、自由で独創的な関係として継承されています。会場に点在する本棚は、新しい思考と出会う装置です。順路はありません。気の向くままに歩き回り、本棚に込められたテーマに紐づく本と遭遇してください。窓から注ぐ太陽の光を感じ、窓から見える風景を見ながら、その場所に漂う思考と向き合うことができます。

1977年滋賀県生まれ。2004年東京藝術大学大学院修了、同年 松井亮建築都市設計事務所設立。主な作品に、 ｢Overture」「Rebirth House」「Hitoshinaya」「自由学園みらいかん」「さんぽう西村屋本店」「南三陸の家」等がある。主な受賞暦は、Contractworld Award 2010 / 最優秀賞（独）、 AR House Awards 2015 / Highly Commended・次点（英）、AIT AWARD 2020（独）、Restaurant and bar design awards 2020（英）、 JCD デザインアワード / 金賞・銀賞・ 審査員賞（日）、グッドデザイン賞 2021/ ベスト 100（日）、他多数。
